LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — warfare II pilot Henry M. Robert Friend, one in every of the last original members of the famed all-black town Airmen, has died at the age of 99.
Friend’s girl, karen Friend Crumlich, told The Desert Sun her father died weekday at a Southern california hospital.

Born in South Carolina on 1920’s leap day, Friend flew 142 combat missions in warfare II as part of the elite of fighter pilots trained at Alabama’s town Institute. The program was created once the NAACP began difficult policies barring black folks from flying military aircraft.
